The practical answer

SUBR WVD stands for subrogation waived. It is the narrow column near the middle of an ACORD 25 certificate of liability insurance, and a Y in it says the producer believes a waiver of subrogation endorsement applies to that line of coverage.

The ACORD 25 is dense with three and four letter labels because the whole form has to fit on one page. Here is every abbreviation on it, what each one means, and, more usefully, what each one actually proves. Most of them prove less than people assume.

01

The two checkbox columns

These sit between the coverage type and the policy number, one row per line of coverage:

  • ADDL INSD: additional insured. A Y asserts that somebody, usually the certificate holder, has been added to that policy by endorsement.
  • SUBR WVD: subrogation waived. A Y asserts that the insurer has given up its right to recover from a party named or described in a waiver endorsement.
  • Both are single characters typed by a person at an agency. Neither names the form, the edition, or the party. Neither is the endorsement. A Y in SUBR WVD with no CG 24 04 or WC 00 03 13 behind it is an assertion with nothing under it.
02

The left-hand column and the insurer block

INSR LTR is the insurer letter. The top of the certificate lists INSURER A through INSURER F with their names and NAIC numbers, and the letter in each coverage row points back to whichever of them wrote that line. It matters when a vendor's general liability and workers compensation sit with different carriers, or when one line is placed with a non-admitted insurer.

NAIC # is the National Association of Insurance Commissioners company code. It is the reliable way to identify the actual carrier, because carrier trade names change and group names are ambiguous.

03

General liability row

  • OCCUR and CLAIMS-MADE: the coverage trigger. Occurrence responds to injury that happens during the policy period whenever the claim arrives. Claims-made responds only while the policy or an extension is live.
  • EACH OCCURRENCE: the most payable for a single loss.
  • DAMAGE TO RENTED PREMISES (Ea occurrence): fire legal liability, usually a small sublimit.
  • MED EXP (Any one person): no-fault medical payments, typically five or ten thousand dollars.
  • PERSONAL & ADV INJURY: libel, slander, wrongful eviction and similar offenses.
  • GENERAL AGGREGATE: the annual ceiling across all claims.
  • PRODUCTS - COMP/OP AGG: the separate annual ceiling for completed operations, which is the limit that answers a claim after the work is finished.
  • GEN'L AGGREGATE LIMIT APPLIES PER: POLICY, PROJECT or LOC. If POLICY is ticked, one bad claim somewhere else can exhaust the aggregate that was supposed to be standing behind your job.
04

Auto, umbrella and workers compensation rows

  • ANY AUTO, OWNED AUTOS ONLY, SCHEDULED AUTOS, HIRED AUTOS ONLY, NON-OWNED AUTOS ONLY: which vehicles the auto policy reaches. A vendor whose staff drive their own cars to your site needs hired and non-owned, and a certificate showing OWNED AUTOS ONLY does not have it.
  • COMBINED SINGLE LIMIT: one limit covering bodily injury and property damage together.
  • UMBRELLA LIAB and EXCESS LIAB with OCCUR or CLAIMS-MADE, plus DED and RETENTION: excess coverage sitting above the primary limits. Umbrella wording can be broader than the underlying policy, excess normally follows form.
  • PER STATUTE and OTHER on the workers compensation row: statutory benefits are set by state law, so no dollar limit is printed.
  • E.L. EACH ACCIDENT, E.L. DISEASE EA EMPLOYEE, E.L. DISEASE POLICY LIMIT: employers liability, the part of a comp policy that answers a suit rather than a benefits claim. This is the limit most contracts specify.
  • ANY PROPRIETOR/PARTNER/EXECUTIVE OFFICER/MEMBER EXCLUDED?: a Y here means an owner has opted out of their own comp coverage. On a two-person crew that can mean nobody on your site is covered.
05

The free-text and holder blocks

DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONS / LOCATIONS / VEHICLES is where the agent types the sentence a contract asked for: additional insured wording, primary and non-contributory wording, waiver language, project numbers. It is free text with no verification behind it, and it is the field most often used to describe coverage that the policy does not contain.

CERTIFICATE HOLDER is the party the certificate was addressed to. The disclaimer at the top of every ACORD 25 says the certificate confers no rights on that party. PRODUCER is the agency that issued it, and it is the party worth emailing at renewal, because they are the only ones who can reissue.

06

What to do with a Y in SUBR WVD

Treat it as a claim that needs evidence, and ask for the endorsement:

  • On general liability, the ISO form is CG 24 04, or a carrier's own equivalent.
  • On workers compensation, the NCCI form is WC 00 03 13, with state variants in the monopolistic and independent-bureau states.
  • Check whether the waiver is blanket, meaning it applies wherever a signed contract requires one, or scheduled, meaning your exact legal entity has to appear in it.
  • Match the policy number and effective dates on the endorsement to the ones on the certificate face. A waiver attached to last year's policy number is not evidence about this year.

Common questions

What teams usually ask

What does SUBR WVD mean on a certificate of insurance?

Subrogation waived. It indicates that a waiver of subrogation endorsement is believed to apply to that line of coverage, which means the insurer has given up its right to recover from the waived party after paying a claim.

What does ADDL INSD mean?

Additional insured. It indicates that a party has been added to the policy by endorsement. The column does not say which endorsement, which edition, or which party, so it is a pointer rather than proof.

Is a checked SUBR WVD box enough for compliance?

Not if your contract requires the waiver. The certificate itself states that it confers no rights and does not amend the policy. The endorsement is the document that grants the waiver, and it is what you should collect and store.

What does INSR LTR mean?

Insurer letter. It maps each coverage row to one of the carriers listed as INSURER A through F at the top of the certificate, which is how a certificate shows that different lines are written by different companies.
